Astigmatism Astigmatism may develop as a result of a problem in the curve of the cornea. The shortening of the cornea at the ends may lead to conditions of near-sight or far-sight. The change in the shape of the cornea causes a different curvature ratio in the main axis so, when light passes through the cornea, images are distorted. Hereditary is a factor in astigmatism and, in some cases, it can occur after transplant or cataract surgery.

Types – There are different kinds of astigmatism. Simple astigmatism involves one axis. Compound astigmatism, in addition to affecting axis, is related to conditions of near-sight or far-sight.  Mixed astigmatism is the condition whereby an axis focuses before the retina (short) and behind it (far).

Symptoms – The most common symptom is image distortion. The patient may also experience headache or eye trouble. In addition, depending on age and the type of astigmatism, symptoms can vary or affect vision.

Time – The procedure takes less than a minute. Consultation, preparation and post-surgery care takes approximately two hours.
