Orthopedics:
Knee Cruciate Ligament
General description
Orthopedic surgery repairs the knee cruciate ligament through arthroscopy. This procedure utilizes camera surgery and microscopic instruments in large and narrow tubes. Small incisions are made. Treatment is designed to alleviate knee problems. Joint problems are often a result of a sport injury.
Benefits
Knee surgery is performed in the following cases:
* A torn meniscus
* A damaged bone (kneecap or patella)
* A damaged ligament
* Inflamed or damaged lining of the joint (synovium)
Arthroscopy is also used to look inside the knee while ligaments and tendons are being repaired from the outside.
Technical description
Procedure – Knee surgery is performed through small punctures in the joint. Treatment proceeds under general anaesthesia. The camera and instruments are placed in the knee articulation. This allows the surgeon to observe the ligaments, meniscus, bone (patella) and the lining of the joint. Damaged tissue is then removed.
Hospitalization – Knee surgery is an ambulatory procedure.
Time – Ligament repair surgery takes approximately 2 hours.
