Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Orthopedic surgery of this type alleviates Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It is caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist. The median nerve gives the thumb and three middle fingers movement and sensitivity. If damaged, it can cause a number of symptoms.

It is necessary to have an electromyography or a pre-surgery nerve conduction evaluation, as well as a basic medical.

Benefits
Orthopedic surgery will correct carpal tunnel syndrome and your hand will recover sensitivity and strength.

Procedure
Orthopedic surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome is ambulatory and performed under local or general anesthesia. The orthopedic surgeon will open a small incision in the wrist and will cut the tissue that presses the nerve to alleviate pain.

After surgery, the wrist must be immobilized in a splint to restore nerve function. During the initial two week recovery period, a splint is used at all times. During the following month, the splint is worn periodically. While it is common to experience moderate pain after surgery, medication will take care of discomfort. Surgeons recommend elevating the hand while sleeping.

Recovery time will vary for each patient. If the syndrome has been present for a long time, recovery may take longer. Moving your fingers and wrist a few days after surgery can help prevent stiffness.

Hospitalization
Ambulatory.

Time
Carpal tunnel surgery takes about 30 minutes.
