Retinal Detachment

Within Ophthalmology, Retinal Detachment occurs when the eye layer is broken and fluids in the vitreous cavity trespass into the retina and accumulate below it. The patient may see “flying flies” or light sparkles. These symptoms should be discussed with the ophthalmologist.

Causes
Several factors can lead to retinal detachment including diabetic retinopathy. It could also develop as the consequence of trauma, retinal degeneration, inflammation or hemorrhage.

Benefits
The most important result of retinal detachment surgery is restored vision. The chances of successful retinal repair depend on the amount of holes in the retina, size and whether scar tissue is pulling the retina forward.

Procedure
The procedure depends on the severity of the damage to the retina. If it is detected when there is a hole, laser can be utilized. However if it is already detached, surgical treatment involves placement of a silicone bandage, as a belt, to fix the retina to the back part of the eyeball.
